Essay Nancy Newhall. Coburn,1882-1966, worked within Stieglitz' circle in New York, being published in 'Camera Work'. But he settled in Britain in 1912, becoming known by his solo show at the RPS. Moving on from 19th C. Pictorialism, he explored abstraction & in 1917 showed the first 'cubist' photographs which he called 'Vortographs'. He was also an expert portraitist publishing 'Men of Mark' 1913 and 1922. Coburn is remembered today as one of photography´s early masters and great innovators. He was a member of The Linked Ring and the Photo-Secession. Bibliography. Chronology. List of plates.
