Of the nine papers presented at the colloquium, seven have been edited for publication. The criterion of selection was by no means that of overall quality. The interesting papers of Dr. Roland Loimeier and Mr. Jacob Mabe are left out because they have been published elsewhere. The colloquium was hosted by the Research Unit Gottstein in the Max Planck Society. The editor expresses his profound gratitude to Professor Klaus Gottstein whose support as the President of the Munich Chapter of the SID has made the colloquium possible. The colloquium was sponsored by the Hanns Seidel Foundation Munich. The Hanns Seidel Foundation begann its development assistance activities in 1981.
