Excerpt: . . . were not supported in sufficient numbers to effect their purpose, and were forced to relinquish the attempt, and reoccupy their former ground on the high land overlooking the ruins of Inkerman. On the 17th August, another bombardment showed that the end was approaching, the Russian losses were so heavy, it was said, that they with difficulty could keep their men in their works, and seldom relieved them. Owing to the constant fire they could no longer repair their parapets which presented in places a most dilapidated appearance; the bridge across the harbor was nearly completed. On the 29th August, Surgeon W. H. Macandrew, M. D. , joined on appointment. Lieutenant C. G. Clarke, with 50 rank and file, arrived 1855 on the 3rd September and were followed on the 5th by Captain J. Stewart, Lieutenants F. S. Schomberg, Sir R. Douglas, Baronet, DArcey Curwen, with 100 rank and file, and Lieutenant H. H. Chanter joined on the following day, all from the Reserve Depot at Malta. The Fifty-seventh Camp being situated on the slope in rear of what is known as Cathcarts Hill --from the fact that Sir G. Cathcart and many other Officers were buried there--is within about one and a half miles of the batteries of Sebastopol. The Russians had recently mounted some heavy guns which they fired at very uncertain hours, with a high elevation, causing considerable uneasiness, particularly at night, when the shot and shell pitched actually in the Camp, or in its immediate vicinity. Several casualties occurred from their long shots which the men christened Whistling Jimmies, from the peculiar Bound they produced in their flight.
