The multicellular forms consist of cell-rows (filaments), cellsurfaces, and cell-bodies. These vary greatly in their mode of development. Certain filamentous forms have no localized centres of growth, but increase in size by the growth of any or all the cells composing the plant. Other more complex forms show a distinct separation into meristem and lasting tissue, the urmeristem of the higher plants being represented by a single apical cell, or by a number of meristem cells. Among plants of the latter class a method of growth described as peculiar to s the fungi is sometimes found. Dif ferent species of Fucus, for example, form the larger part of their tissues by cell division in the apical region, g but in addition to this, long cylin Fig. 36. Portion of a one-celled Alga, Caulerpa prolifera. (Accd. to Schacht. ) drical cells grow out in various parts of the plant, pushing their way between the other cells, in a manner closely resembling the growth of the fungous hyphae. A good example of growth from a single apical cell is found in the-genus Stypocaulon, which grows in such a manner as to suggest the stem and branches of the cormophytes. The apical cell of this plant is cylindrical, terminating in a convex surface, and the axis is increased in length by segments cut off from this cell by walls at right angles to the main axis of growth. These segments grow to a certain length and then rapidly divide by walls in three directions, thus forming a cell body whose terminal portion remains as a single row of cells. Other changes occur by which the form of the whole plant is greatly modifi. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN.
