Excerpt from British Mezzotinto Portraits, Vol. 4 of 4: Being a Descriptive Catalogue of These Engravings From the Introduction of the Art to the Early Part of the Present Century; Arranged According to the Engravers; The Inscriptions Given at Full Length; And the Variations of State Precisely Set Forth James walker, according to Nagler and Redgrave, was born in 1748 the son of a captain in the merchant service; became pupil of V. Green when fifteen years old in 1784, went to Russia with the appointment of Engraver to the Empress Catherine; returned, in 1802, with a pension, and died in 1808. It is probable that the date (1763) of his becoming Green's pupil is some years too early, and the date of his death cannot be reconciled with that in Nos. 1, 9, 14, 16, except by supposing that these plates were left incomplete by him, and finished and published years after his death, or that they were re-issued but the state of the impressions does not corroborate the latter supposition. Redgrave also mentions that his plates remained in his own pos session, but were unfortunately all lost by the ship, in which they were coming to England, foundering off Yarmouth.
