Excerpt from The Goncourt Brothers Family Connections Paternal The family of the Huot de Goncourts came from Bassigny, a part of Lorraine where the land has subsided to make on one hand the valley of the Meuse, on the other that of the Mouzon. The upper valley of the Meuse, which possesses all the characteristics of the Lorraine country, presents a perfect uniformity in appearance and customs. Communes are grouped around their crumbling castles: in the plain, each clustered about its parish church, the villages extend in a kind of drab archipelago along the Roman road that runs from Lyons to Treves, through Langres and Soulosse. The houses are low-built, with porches rounded in the mamier of Lorraine or Franche-Comte, and there are dunghills everywhere. A strange region, as M. Paul Odinot remarks in an unpublished study, Les Goncourts et le Bassigny Lorrain, a mysterious region of witches and warlocks, of weird apparitions; a region five times ravaged by invasions, and in winter preyed upon by wolves; a region that does not know where its frontiers he, nor who is its rightful ruler; where the people are at times as surly as farm dogs and at others as warm and homely as bread; a region where winter is long and springtime chilly, abounding in hunters and poachers, and conspirators. It lacks neither grandeur nor charm, although the Goncourt brothers would not have allowed as much. It seems to me, says the Journal, that a region in which people eat so much veal is done for. It has no future, and I am resolved to sell my farms at the very first opportunity. Goncourt is situated in the Haute-Mame, in the centre of Bassigny, about fifteen kilometres and a half south of Neufchateau on the left bank of the Meuse. Its site is pleasant and agreeably cool. A statue of the Virgin, at a httle distance from the church, commemorates the fact that the inhabitants of Goncourt had the good fortune to escape the disasters of 1870.
