Among many styles of art, Durkin works in scratchboard art. A form of direct engraving, scratchboard art is a technique in which a board covered with wax and black ink is used and the artist removes ink to reveal the board beneath by scratching or carving the design. This then reveals a white or colored layer beneath. Scratchboard can be used to yield highly detailed, precise and evenly textured artwork. The art can be left black and white or colored. Durkin uses this opportunity to tint the sky, water, and nature with color and his very own brand of artistic magic creating a vibrant and dazzling world within the illustration.
