There are fifty measured drawings showing all the fine details of construction. Each is accompanied by a photograph (many have been spe-cially taken for this volume), of that piece, and two others of related pieces or interiors, a total of over two hundred generous illustrations. In contrast to the tiny photographs found in most furniture manuals, these reveal the splendid wood grains, inlays, finishes and other features of craftsmanship. Measured drawings, photographs and the commen-tary that accompanies each piece will make you aware of well-designed furniture wherever you encounter it, as fine examples are finding their way into museums to be enjoyed by all, or are becoming available as repro-ductions within the means of many homeowners. The finest collections of the country are represented by selections from twenty-four museums. In this volume is an array of excellent essays: Our Heritage; Survey of American Furniture Periods; The Quest for Beauty; the Lure of the Antique; and Philadelphia Cabinet-makers. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow shows Mr. Margon's conclusions, the result of a lifetime of study as an apprentice, draftsman, decorator and designer, on contemporary taste. A complete section, with his-torical background essay, is devoted to chairs, the test and proof of a designer's skill. Along with names, dates, localities and other informa-tion, Mr. Margon reveals the Spirit that has created the splendid variety of American furniture, the devel-opment of which is so closely related to the growth of our country. From its marvelous diversity the author has chosen many fine examples of each style, to suit every taste, from the Pilgrim Century, the colorfully decorated Pennsylvania German, the simple Shaker, the gracefully curvilinear Queen Anne, and many others. MORE AMERICAN FURNITURE TREA-SURES is a treat for he connoisseur, reference work for the student, and introduction for the public to a fascinating realm of art, and we hope it will be an inspiration for young cabinetmakers to carry on the tradition. About the Author LESTER MARGON was born in New York City. He studied at Mechanic's Institute, Cooper Union, Columbia University, Stevens Institute, Pratt Institute and the New School of Social Science. As apprentice, draftsman and designer, he worked for many furniture organizations in Grand Rapids, Sheboygan and Chicago. Returning to New York, he served as delineator, decorator and interior designer for W.&J. Sloane, the Hampton Shops, and Schmeig-Kotzian. For many years he was the director of the Interior Design Shop. His love of travel enabled him to visit most museums in the United States with furniture collections, making possible his imposing collection of measured drawings and photographs. Mr. Margon won many awards, including two Beaux Arts medals representing New York University in national competitions. He was a life member of the American Institute of Interior Designers. ....Ilke its predecessors...a valuable reference book for designers, students, and anyone else interested in the story of American furniture. Although Margon insists this is not a history of American furniture, it highlights its distinctive qualities and its variety. -Interiors Magazine If you build reproductions of antique furniture or are interested in the history and beauty of this phase of our culture, this book will take a top spot in your library. -Workbench Magazine (Deckeltext) V31768H8 ISBN 803801637 Versand D: 6,00 EUR Möbel, Antiquatitäten, Amerika, Angelegt am: 19.04.2022.
