2021. Paperback. New. About the Book:-While submitting here some prefatory observations on the version of the Shu King presented in this volume. It well to prefix also a brief account of what are regarded as the Sacred books of the religions of China. It has been said that Buddhism was introduced into China in the third century B. C., Its texts were translated into Chinese one portion after another, as they were gradually obtained from India; but it was not till very long afterwards that the Chinese possessed in their own language a complete copy of the Buddhist canon. Translations from the Sanskrit constitute the principal part of the Buddhistic literature of China though there are also many original works in Chinese belonging to it. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 –1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. James Legge (1815 –1897) was a Scottish linguist, missionary, sinologist, and translator who was best known as an early translator of Classical Chinese texts into English. Legge served as a representative of the London Missionary Society in Malacca and Hong Kong (1840–1873) and was the first Professor of Chinese at Oxford University (1876–1897). In association with Max Müller he prepared the monumental Sacred Books of the East series, published in 50 volumes between 1879 and 1891. He was born at Huntly, Aberdeenshire. He enrolled in Aberdeen Grammar School at age 13 and then King's College, Aberdeen at age 15. He then continued his studies at Highbury Theological College, London. He was appointed headmaster of Ying Wa College in Malacca in 1839 and continued in that position until 1867, the college having removed to Hong Kong in 1844. He was pastor of the Union Church in Hong Kong from 1844 to 1867. His great interest in languages had already become apparent at grammar school, when he decided to add English and Italian to his curriculum. He displayed an extraordinary ability to study and thoroughly master a wide variety of languages. He also showed his versatility in his cultural studies. His History of Buddhism in India (1881–83) showed that he had a thorough command of the field, although his incomplete understanding of Eastern astrology and mysticism has been criticized. His positivist approach to the material may have been partly to blame for this.
