The present work deals with somebasic problems common to both the traditions, namely grammariansand dhvani school of rhetoricians. This work seeks to trace themutual relationships, influence, continuance and critical thoughtof works belonging to two different fields. In order to keep theinquiry within limits I have discussed mainly the more importanttheories in both the traditions namely, sphota, pratibha and(dhvani). In this books I have attempted to present the views ofBhartrhari and Anandavardhana in a historical perspective. It is myendeavour to set forth the sphota, pratibha and dhvani theoriesusing modern terminology to the extent possible and necessary. The theory of sphota has been discussed by the ancient andmodern scholars alike. It has undergone two differentinterpretations : phonetic and semantic. Mandana Misra, KaundaBhatta and Nagesa Bhatta support sphota to explain unitariness ofword and sentences as a meaning conveying units. According toAnandavardhana, just as the sounds reveal meaningful entities so inpoetry words and their meanings reveal suggested sense. Just as thesphota theory takes into account both the sound element and themeaning element similarly Anandavardhana's dhvani theory says thatsounds reveal suggested sense.
