In fact, the village community acted as the driving force behind the Rebellion. Santal institutions, Santal rituals, customs and traditions were the cementing force that bound the rebels together. The revolt was a desperate attempt to defend the Santal way of life which was being undermined by the influx of outsiders. The survival of the village community was a cause for which the Santals fought as best as they could, but they lost, because they did not know how to win. "The Rebellion was in the nature of a peasant uprising in which the village community played a vital part, but the village community was also the cause of its undoing. To the rebels, the supposed source of strength was not one but two: peasant power plus super-natural power. Peasant power was invincible. The revolt was really a saga of courage and sacrifice, but super-natural power did not work, as it was based on wishful thinking.
