The exploratory work on the structure, function and development of the gills and accessory respiratory organs of air-breathing Fishes was initiated by me at Banaras Hindu University. Since then the work diversified in different directions with the application of new techniques. The bimodal breathing in early Vertebrates evolved during the Devonian period in Dipnoi and palaeoniscoidea (Chondrosteei) group of fishes. They have developed lungs and gills for breathing both air and water. The living genera Polypterus and Polyodon are found in the Nile rive in Africa and Mississipi in North America. From the Palaenioscoidea-Lepisosteus stalk, the Holosteans have evolved. Only a few genera like Amita calva of North America and Acipenser of Europe live in the Sea but migrate up the River Volga in Russia. During the Traissic period the modern group of teleostean fishes (Leptolepimorpha) have evolved from the Holostei. By this time the lungs got transformed into the air-bladder as they migrated into the Seas. During the tertiary period there was depletion of oxygen in the Atmosphere and many teleostean fishes migrated back into Freshwater from the sea. They were living in Rivers and the swampy wetlands in the river basin. As a result they had to gulp in air in the water-air interface. The result is in the development of new organs the accessory respiratory organs from the pharynageal-chamber. Several palaeo-ecological factors were responsible for the evolution of the air-breathing habit in fishes. They are oxygen depletion, high-temperature, less Rainfall and the drying up of the swamps and wetlands. The evolutionary History of air-breathing habit in early vertebrates has been traced in relation to Environmental conditions. The Transition from aquatic to aerial respiration require several Structural modifications of the respiratory organs and their vascular supply. In bimodal breathing Fish with their varied designs of respiratory structures, die vascular system both at macro, and micro levels have been modified with their characteristic shunt systems. Evidence of Plasma skimming at microcirculation level led to Higher haematocrit value at gas exchange surface. There is considerable angiotensin converting Enzyme activity in the respiratory organs of air breathing fishes. The evolutionary transition from aquatic to air-breathing not only encompassed a variety of anatomical and Physiological adjustments in gas exchange and osmoregulatory system, but that a variety of non-respiratory bio-chemical functions of Lung which were originally developed in the fish gill, were shifted subsequently to the air-breathing organs. While the surfactant lining of the lungs is phospholipids in nature, it is mucoid in the case of accessory respiratory organs. This Book has been written for the Graduate and Post Graduate Students of Zoology, Fish and Fisheries Scientists, Physiologists and Teachers involved in Teaching and research.
