He started his career as a school teacher and then joined the literary section of a leading publishing house. His first literary work, a short story, was published in 1958. He has received many awards- the Vidyasagar Award (1985); the Ananda Puraskar (1973 and 1990); and the Sahitya Akademi Award (1989).
