The Historical Development of Chemical Concepts (1991)
ISBN: 9788301100957 bzw. 8301100958, in Englisch, 292 Seiten, PWN + Kluwer Academic, gebundenes Buch, gebraucht.

Since the earliest times, in order to understand various phenomena, man has been creating scientific terms and notions to help him describe his observations and formulate conclusions. Along with the influx of new information those terms and notions undergo transformations and it often happens that the same term is used to describe gradually changing ideas. The aim of this book has been to trace over the centuries the changes in meaning of some basic terms and notions which are essential for the understanding of chemical phenomena. They are: the chemical element, the smallest particle of matter, the structure of chemical compounds, and their ability to undergo transformations. Since these terms and notions are the very fundamental ones, the book has had to cover a considerable part of the history of chemistry. The main emphasis has been put on the problem-centred approach. The author shows the reader how chemistry has reached the present level of development, as reflected in modern textbooks. He discusses the notions stated above starting from Antiquity. The ways of reasoning in those times were completely different from the modern ones, however, the ancient formulations were the basis on which the modern ones were formed. A great deal of space is devoted in this book to the early concepts of chemistry, and there are numerous quotations from the original old texts. The closer we approach the present times, the easier it is to understand the views of individual researchers - thus there is merely a brief mention in this volume of the development of chemistry in the last 50 years, though it has been varied and eventful. The reader will also see that each of the old theories - however absurd it may seem to us today - is justified when considered against the background of its times and the then level of science. Hardcover, Label: PWN + Kluwer Academic, PWN + Kluwer Academic, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 1991, Studio: PWN + Kluwer Academic.
