Description “The book Little Man is a unique work - over 140 photos of the classic of Polish photography, Zofia Rydet, innovative graphic design by Wojciech Zamecznik and wise quotes from the writings of Janusz Korczak. The album, published in 1965 by the Arkady publishing house, still impresses today, both with its photographs and form, with its original approach to the subject of a child and the charm of rotogravure printing. Although the album is part of the worldwide publishing trend of photo books, in the People's Republic of Poland it was a sensation and had no equal. When photographers' original albums were already circulating around the world since the 1950s, such as the classic ones today: Robert Frank's Les Americains (1958), Henri Cartier-Bresson 's The Decisive Moment (1952) or Robert Doisneau's Les parisiens tels qu'ils sont (1954), building the identity of humanistic photography, only Photography can be identified in PolandEdward Hartwig (1958), which, although attractive from a publishing point of view, presents a completely different way of thinking about photography. Reportage photography in the humanistic spirit began to develop in Poland along with the thaw, from 1955 and at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s it had its golden age. When, in 1961, Rydet showed the photographs from the series Little Man in a Problem Arrangement for the first time , they must have moved the audience a lot, evoking the iconic exhibition of Edward Steichen's Family of Man shown two years earlier. A Little Man is the first consistent photographic project of Rydet, who took up photography as a mature person. The cycle was carried out in the years 1952-1963. For the author, who herself had no children, the topic of the child, next to the topic of motherhood and old age, occupied a special place. The photographs were taken in Poland and during many foreign trips: to Albania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Egypt, Lebanon and the Czech Republic. It is remarkable that Rydet managed to look at childhood without simplifications. The photographer, like Janusz Korczak, the author of the quotes included in the publication, saw the child as an autonomous subject whose life is as complex as that of adults. Quotations from Korczak's writings, selected by the photographer, help in such a perception, who in the pre-war years was an advocate of children's rights and at the same time the most outstanding Polish educator and ardent humanist. The importance of his ideas for Zofia Rydet's project can be seen in a fragment of a letter to the editorial staff of the Polska monthly, dated 29 September 1965: 'I don't know if I was really able to speak up even a little in defense of the little man. I'm afraid that the general public will view it [KL's book] the way other more or less good albums are viewed, will evaluate the photos well or badly, and will not think about and read Korczak's beautiful texts.
