One of the most important works undertaken by King Charles III to urbanize the capital of Spain was a new layout of the so-called Prado de San Jeronimo or St. Jerome's Meadows. The great Neo-Classical architect Juan de Villanueva 1739-1811 was commissioned to carry out this project; he designed the Botanical Gardens, the Astronomical Observatory and in 1785 began work on a magnificent building, the present-day Prado, which waa originally inteded to house the royal collection of natural science and thus become a Natural History Museum. Construction work advanced rapidly and the museum was finished early in the 19th century. However, due to the Napoleonic invasion the natural history collection could not be installed in the new building. This magnificent building had been ruined by the French invasion, but when Ferdinand VII after his return to Spain decided, on his ministers' advice and with his wiffe Isabella's support, to creae an art museum to display the royal collections, the choice fell on the abandoned Prado building and restoration work commenced. This is a magnificent guide book with significant historiical interest. . Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 4 1/2" X 7 1/2".
