The Ethics of Joy in the Hospital Context is the result of the psychologist Morgana Masetti’s studies on the relationships experienced by people undergoing hospital treatment. Masetti’s need for a higher professional purpose in healthcare institutions and her desire to find a new approach to patients’ experiences reached a turning point when she met Wellington Nogueira, a clown that focused his artistic performances on entertaining hospitalized children. When Masetti first saw Nogueira as Dr. Zinho, acting as a “nonsensologist” for the kid patients, she realized that there was something different in the relationships the clown was establishing in the hospital. Since that moment, Masetti has been reflecting on the work of the Doutores da Alegria, a non-profit association founded in 1991, which brings together professional artists working in hospitals in the Brazilian cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Recife. Masetti’s efforts and analysis resulted in 1998 in her first book Clowns’ Solutions – Transforming Hospital Realities; about the encounters between clowns and kids. Masetti’s latest book, based on the thesis for her master’s degree, advances her investigation of the transformations that clown interventions have induced in health professionals’. Masetti’s main goal is to point out to readers the guiding principles for this group of artists’ interactions with the hospital environment, the ways in which they develop their values and their activities, and finally the characteristics of that particular universe that help improve the quality of relationships and encourages the development of healthcare treatment. The Ethics of Joy in the Hospital Context is a book about encounters. Nonetheless, its main goal is to reflect on the work of the Doutores da Alegria and on how their interventions can inspire doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers to adopt the ethics of joy in their everyday routine, Kindle Edition, Ausgabe: 1, Format: Kindle eBook, Produktgruppe: eBooks, Publiziert: 2013-12-30, Freigegeben: 2013-12-30, Verkaufsrang: 153957.
