Center for Research in the Humanities, Copenhagen University, 1990. Soft cover. Fair. Paperback, 138 pages, NOT ex-library. Internally in good condition, worn cover. Pages slightly age-toned, untanned, clean, with just a couple of faint marks from reading; text unmarked, no writing, no highlighting of any kind. Gently creased tip of upper corner of last pages, a hint of a vertical crease to first/last pages (impression of cover flaps). Secure undamaged binding. Cover noticeably shelfworn with heavily rubbed edges, scratches, scuffing, small marks and creases. -- The basic expression of the Absolutist State was its monarch's endeavour to obtain a monopoly of violence, which manifested itself on the one hand in semi-permanent royal warfare against neighbouring states, and on the other hand in the state's control of the violence, which its subjects inflicted upon each other. Being the central issue as well as an important weapon in the struggle for power, the violence of both the prince and the people had a profound impact on the action, ideals and mentality of the historical actors themselves. This book presents three studies of the role of official as well as unofficial violence in the power struggles of the Absolutist State. V.G. Kiernan surveys the functions of the almost permanent royal warfare in Early Modern Europe; R. Muchembled carries out a historical anthropological case-study of the interpersonal violence of the inhabitants of Artois as a means of popular socialization on the one hand, and as an object of royal control on the other; whilst S.T. Christensen carries out a case-study of the nature, structure and function of the organized violence embodied in the crescent battle order, which was the Ottomans' secret weapon; in their wars with the Christians. By studying the Absolutist State and its genesis from the point of view of violence this book offers a presentation of the strained and violent character of absolutism in Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
