71 S.; Illustr.; qu.-21 cm; kart. Gutes Ex. - Dänisch; englisch. // Intro By Rasmus Vestergaard, museum curator, mag.art. / With the exhibition mellem-billeder the spectator's picture perception (and picture prejudices) are put to the test. We are challenged and surprised, but constantly feel very close to home indeed. In his photographic art Seren Lose works with the perception and representation of reality. Through digital adaptations and manipulations of photographs he has found, Lose examines the relation between the visual work of art and the reality that is pictured. Lose uses tourist snapshots as his raw material. It seems that these snapshots can be considered, culturally, as a 'picture genre' - a genre we all recognise. Not only is the representation of holiday destinations, attractions and family members practically identical from photo album to photo album, but the composition of the pictures also indicate that we have a common understanding of the picture as a 'witness'. A witness which immortalises the individual experience and creates a bridge between the exotic (away) and the usual (home). The general attitude seems to be that the photograph can and will freeze reality as it is. This 'truth' very much locates the sight that we use when we concentrate on looking. Someone said, quite fittingly, that the photograph creates a norm for how human beings look at the world around them, and that for that reason the photographic medium has forever changed the idea of reality and realism. Soren Lose's visual art strongly confronts this attitude. By displacing the normal rooting in time, place and space of the photographic image, Lose creates a picture universe, which sets off new realisations and stories. In the artist's almost cinematic compositions the individual work of art shows that pictures are constructions resting on aesthetic and motivational priorities. This relation is very much a theme in Lose's more abstract works, in which the photograph has completely or partly 'lost' its function of mirroring reality. Like the painting, the photograph is an expression of the artist's version of what has been seen, and not an impression of a real occurrence. Keeping this in mind, the exhibition mellem-billeder can be taken as a request to reflect on the identity of visual arts and the relation between authenticity, reality and art. Mellem-billeder presents works from the period 2001-2006. Soren Lose has exhibited at many museums and galleries in Denmark and Europe. With this exhibition Skive Kunstmuseum is proud to be the first art museum to offer a self-contained exhibition with this promising artist.
