Fatah-Black examines Suriname's history from roughly the onset of English colonization in 1650 until the collapse of Dutch overseas power at the end of the 18th century. He concentrates on 1683-1795, the period that the Dutch-chartered Surname Company ruled the colony. The Dutch, under the auspices of Zeeland, conquered Surname from the English in 1667, he says, when it was a sugar colony. But finding the West African colony difficult to manage, the Dutch government sold it to the Dutch West India Company in 1682, which formed the Suriname Company with other investors. The company used the colony to acquire tropical products for the Dutch market, to create a new market for finished goods from Europe, and to expand its shipping business.
