Spektakuläre Verfilmung des Bestsellers von Max Brooks über eine globale Zombie-Epidemie, die die Menschheit auszulöschen droht.Näher am Zeitgeist als "World War Z" kann man sich einen als großen Sommer-Blockbuster konzipierten Studiofilm kaum vorstellen: ein im Wortsinne globaler Schocker, der den Ausbruch einer Zombieplage und seine rasend schnelle Verbreitung auf allen Kontinenten als Prämisse nimmt, um zunächst in den USA, schließlich aber an Fronten überall auf der Welt um das Bestehen der Menschheit zu kämpfen - ein Last Stand im Spannungsfeld zwischen "Contagion" und "Dawn of the Dead" (Zack Snyders Version von 2004). Dass der Film von "Ein Quantum Trost"-Regisseur Marc Forster mit seinen rasenden Horden untoter Menschenfresser, deren Aggression sich in größeren Gruppen immer weiter amplifiziert zu denkbar körperlichen Shitstorms, so punktgenau ein Produkt unserer Zeit ist, erwies sich zumindest während der Produktion als Hemmschuh: Sensibilisiert von den kostspieligen Studioflops "John Carter - Zwischen zwei Welten" und "Battleship", wurde jedes noch so kleine Problem der sicherlich nicht einfachen Dreharbeiten mit multiplen Drehbuchautoren, geschassten Kameramännern und Effektspezialisten und angeblicher Spannungen zwischen Star und Produzent Brad Pitt und seinem Regisseur in die Öffentlichkeit geblasen, mit einer Lust am Sensationalismus, die sich mit dem Blutdurst der Zombiemassen im Film vergleichen lassen. Als Produktion und Studio schließlich nach Forsters Director's Cut befanden, der zwölfminütige Action-Showdown in den Straßen von Moskau funktioniere nicht, und Damon Lindelof und Drew Goddard an Bord holten, um ein komplett neues Ende zu ersinnen, schrillten endgültig alle Alarmglocken.Was gar nicht nötig gewesen wäre. Nach Sichtung des endgültig fertiggestellten Films, der ein halbes Jahr später in die Kinos kommt als ursprünglich geplant und als bislang aufwändigster Titel der eher auf künstlerisch ambitioniertes Programm wie "Tree of Life" oder "Killing Them Softly" spezialisierten Produktionsfirma Plan B aus der Rolle fällt, lässt sich zwar feststellen, dass gerade der Übergang in den neu gedrehten letzten Akt des Films nicht ganz nahtlos gelingt. Aber so reizvoll es wohl auch gewesen wäre, Brad Pitt an der Spitze einer Revolution gegen die Zombies als Mann der Tat zu sehen, ist doch die Idee, gerade für den Showdown auf eine Verengung des Raumes zu setzen und eine klare Duell-Situation abseits des vorangegangenen Chaos zu schaffen, brillant: Hier muss Pitt nicht die Muskeln, sondern seinen Grips spielen lassen, um in den Gängen eines verwaisten Labors Katz und Maus mit seinen Gegnern spielen zu können. Er muss all das im Verlauf des Films angehäufte Wissen über das Verhalten der Zombies in die Praxis umsetzen, und das gelingt sehr elegant und in gelungenem Kontrast zu den fünf großen Action-Setpieces davor.Wie überhaupt "World War Z" über ungewöhnliche Schauwerte verfügt, als hätte man Danny Boyles "28 Days Later" in ein Szenario verlegt, dessen epische Ausmaße es auch mit den "Herr der Ringe"-Filme aufnehmen könnten. Besonders gelungen sind der erste Angriff der Zombies in den Straßen von Philadelphia, in der der mit Krisenherden bestens vertraute Ex-UNO-Mann Gerry Lane seine Familie aus höchster Gefahr retten muss, und eine spätere Sequenz in dem von hohen Mauern abgesicherten Jerusalem, in der ausgerechnet ein zwischen Israelis und Palästinensern angestimmtes Friedenslied Ausgang einer besonders heftigen Attacke des Untotenschwarms ist. Davor hatte der Protagonist bereits einen Wissenschaftler auf der Suche nach dem Ursprung der Epidemie nach Südkorea begleiten müssen, wo Regisseur Marc Forster einige albtraumhafte Bilder gelingen, die die Aussichtslosigkeit der Situation drastisch unterstreichen. Und später gibt es noch eine wilde Szene in einem Passagierflugzeug, in dem man sich einer Attacke nur damit zu erwehren weiß, indem man ein Loch in die Bordwand sprengt. Für Spektakel ist also gesorgt.Und doch ist "WWZ" immer dann am besten, wenn er kurz innehält: Als Gerry befürchtet, er könne sich angesteckt haben, bleibt er am Rand eines Hochhauses stehen und wartet ab - sollte er tatsächlich zum Untoten werden, würde er sich in die Tiefe stürzen. Solche Momente findet man oft, hier offenbart sich Marc Forsters Gespür für die Figuren, für die Ungewöhnlichkeit seiner Geschichte. Wenn der Film auch vermeintliche Hauptfiguren im weißen Rauschen aus den Augen verliert und nicht alle Konflikte ausreizt, ist man doch beeindruckt: Ein globaler Thriller ganz ohne Superhelden und doch so packend?
