[This book] paints a vivid picture of developments, events and key figures Dutch photography from 1839 to the present day, within their social, economic, technological, cultural and historical context. The book is organized around ten themes, including photography and the city, engagement, colonial photography and the perception of the 'other', the landscape, the photobook as a collaborative project and the relationship between photography and art. These themes focus partly on particular periods, yet at the same time provide starting points for tracing the course of developments in the past and interpreting modern advances. The book does not therefore follow a strictly chronological order, but largely discusses subjects within a thematic context. The chapters are punctuated by box texts about influential photographers, exhibitions, remarkable techniques, photojournalism, photography magazines and publishers. This book contains over 600 photographs by more than 200 photographers. The best works have been selected from the most important Dutch photography collections, including the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum, the Print Room of Leiden University ibrary and the Amsterdam City Archives. This publication is an invaluable source of information and enjoyment for anyone interested in photography and visual culture.
