Donnybrook is een mengeling van pure adrenaline, rauwe humor en het over the top geweld van Quentin Tarantino en de hick fiction van Cormach McCarthy en Donald Ray Pollock. Voor Jarhead Johnny Earl is er nog maar één mogelijkheid om eten te kopen voor zijn gezin en dat is de Donnybrook in Orange County winnen. Elk jaar in augustus komen daar de meest doorgewinterde bare-knuckle-vechters bij elkaar voor dit toernooi. Onder toeziend oog van een enthousiaste menigte vol drugs, drank, weddenschappen en hamburgers, gaan twintig mannen elkaar te lijf tot er nog maar één overeind staat. De overblijver wint de ongelofelijke prijs van honderdduizend dollar. Jarhead staat bekend als de meest taaie bokser uit Kentucky en is ervan overtuigd dat de Donnybrook zijn weg naar een beter leven en een ontsnapping aan als zijn problemen is. Maar er zijn meer die azen op de Donnybrook.
