Dear Reader, Welcome to the first issue of TIC, a bi-annual publication which presents recent scientific analysis of media, information technology, and (tele-) communication in all their facets. As we near the dawn of the 21St century, developments in these sectors continue to intensify. Technological transformation and convergence have been paralleled by significant changes in institutional practice and in the social and individual use of digital communications. These changes, in turn, have served increasingly to erode any sense of complacency with our established research traditions. We see TIC as a forum for self-reflection, innovation, and interdisciplinary in the pursuit of these issues. But we also see it as a site for consolidation. Unlike many other research journals, TIC offers thematically coherent issues; unlike many books, it offers more concise and (we hope) more up-to-date access to the field. Why did we found TIC? Because we wanted to create a platform for the investigation of communication processes based in a European country (the Netherlands) and aimed (in a typical Dutch fashion) at an international audience. We wanted this platform, in turn, to bridge the gap between fundamental research and application from the just-mentioned perspectives. Although we present scientific findings, we also want to address the practitioner and the interested public. In this first issue, we have collected a number of articles which reflect upon recent media developments; the users needs vis-á-vis these developments; and the potential impact on the individual and society. The first article by Groebel offers a general approach to the analysis (and the societal/market implications) of the whole communications spectrum. Van Dijk, Bouwman and van Bronswijk deal with current systems - internet, multimedia, virtual reality - and their structures and effects. And van Woerkum and Uricchio discuss the evolution of media systems, their impact on (library) knowledge and the lessons that can be learned from cultural historySoort: Met illustraties;Taal: Nederlands;Afmetingen: 12x240x172 mm;Gewicht: 224,00 gram;Druk: 1;ISBN10: 9053522301;ISBN13: 9789053522301; Nederlandstalig | Paperback.
