This remarkable issue chronicles The New Dance Group (NDG), the radical dance group formed in New York City in 1932 in the depths of the Depression, which survives today although with a very different focus. Most of the articles were contributed by creative forces who were closely associated with NDG as faculty, choreographers, or board members. The chronicle places the birth and development of NDG in the artistic, social and political context in which it was born. Many other radical dance groups with similar missions and ideologies arose at the same time, but only the NDG has managed to survive to this day. Subsequently, the changes in the New Dance Group reflect the vast changes in Society from the 1940's to the present. In 1993, a memorable retrospective concert of NDG works from 1936-1979 was held. An account of that concert is included. The issue offers appendices of students, artists, and staff, and both chronological and alphabetical lists of events presented by NDG from 1933-1970.
