Karel en Bozena willen dolgraag een kind maar dat lukt maar niet. Op een dag vindt Karel in de tuin een boomwortel die tot zijn verbazing wel wat weg heeft van een kind. Na enige aanpassingen door Karel ziet Bozena in het bruine gedrocht het kind, dat ze met haar hele hart wenst en adopteert het onder de naam Otik. Gevoed door de op hol geslagen moederinstincten van Bozena komt Otik wonderwel tot leven. Hij beschikt over een ongekende eetlust. Het noodlot slaat toe wanneer de voeding van Bozena niet genoeg is om de honger van Otik te stillen en hij zich daarop vergrijpt aan zijn omgeving.
