From the blurb: "a highly important contribution both to the history of the book trade, bookbinding and collecting, and to the history of art and European cul tural history of the 16th century in general.The group of Italian Renaissance bindings decorated with a plaquette of Apollo and Pegasus has attracted the attention of scholars and collectors since they were first noticed in print by Thomas Frognall Dibdin in 1817. Many attempts have been made to identify the original owner. .Anthony Hobson has submitted the 144 recorded volumes of the collection to close scrutiny. He has discovered that some of them contain notes, that the choice of titles permits certain deductions to be made about their owner and that the pattern of their dispersal leads to other conclusions. He investigates the meaning of the Apollo and Pegasus device, and suggests how it should be interpreted. Finally he compares what has been deduced about the books and their owner with the formation of a collection de scribed in a contemporary correspondence, and shows that the two libraries must be identical. The owner proves to have been a young man whose name had not previously been mentioned in connection with the bindings. The author next considers the circumstances and chronology of the library's formation, and advances an explanation why no books printed after 1548 are known in these bindings. An account of the owner's life follows.Subsequently, the craftsmen who produced the bindings are considered. The Apollo and Pegasus collection was the work of three men, who are identified and their careers traced from entries in the accounts of the Vatican Library and of the Popes' Tesoreria Segreta, and from their extant work. The bindings made for Apollonio Filareto and the mysterious 'I. Ruizi', as well as a group decorated with a gilt stamp of a phoenix, are discussed and new evidence introduced. Other topics include the relationship between binders and the book trade in sixteenth-century Italy; and the choice of titles and editions in the collection, in particular to what extent it was influenced by a taste for fine printing. The final chapter traces the dispersal of the library, and shows how it was that, although a substantial part remained intact in family ownership until the 19th century, all memory of the original owner had been lost by 1859. A census of the collection, a family tree tracing the books' descent, an appendix of documents relating to the books or their owner, and indices of past and present owners complete the book. ".
