The ancient art of rhetoric has always had a controversial reputation. Still it was the end of the nineteenth century before attempts to remove this 'absurdity' once and for all from education systems throughout Europe succeeded. It is questionable, however, whether rhetoric ever really died. While it may be true that the system is no longer drilled into pupils, that it no longer functions as a framework for the creation of all literary and other works of art, that - as is sometimes said - there are no longer any great practitioners of the art, none of this detracts from the fact that rhetoric enjoys a genuine renaissance during the last decades. In fact, since this revival manifests itself in all manner of forms and metamorphoses, it is perhaps best to use the plural form and to speak of the renaissances of rhetoric. On the other hand, our society has undergone an unprecedented explosion of information and communication. it could be argued that the game of persuading and convincing, has never been so omnipresent. Rhetoric provides an old established model for enabling precisely these strategies to be treated as the object of critical reflection. it may be a necessary element of tolerance. The papers in this collection give an impression of current research activities in this large field. A sketch of the situation as it is in our world today is given by C. Classen and S. IJsseling; they pay considerable attention to the disputes between rhetoric, philosophy and ethics. F. Douay and J. van Iseghem make a study of important turning points in the history of rhetorical education in the nineteenth century france and Flanders. G. Manetti, C. Crapis, M. Prandi, J. Klinkenberg and B. Vickers throw light on specific aspects of the use of insight taken from rhetoric in modern literary studies and semeiotics. They are not afraid to tackle controversies head-on and argue in particular for an unambiguously methodical use of concepts.
