Tunbjörk's images of 'the good life' in Sweden take in the obligatory shopping malls and car park picnic areas, and the desultory suburban social activity that pretends to replicate the traditional communal life of village or city but instead replicates it with a set of bland conventions, usually centered around conspicuous consumption. The people appear happy, or at least not unhappy, but Tunbjörk is always looking for the odd incongruity or the unusual angle that both energizes the frame and hints at something less satisfactory. 'One often looks around nowadays, and there is a bag over the head. An empty bag that possibly never has been filled but rather inflated,' he writes. He uses a medium format camera and color film, which gives his imagery and almost hyper-real clarity.[T]he color is key, lending these images a heightened artificiality that perfectly reflects the artificiality he perceives in these vacuous lives and landscapes."
