McConnell first served with the American Ambulance in France, receiving the Croix de Guerre, before transferring to the Lafayette Escadrille in Oct. 1915 as a sergeant-pilot. The Lafayette Escadrille was an American squadron in the French Flying Corps during World War I and McConnell was one of its original members. He served with such notables as Raoul Luftbery, Victor Chapman, Norman Prince, Kiffin Rockwell, Bill Thaw, and others. McConnell was shot down and killed in March 1917.
