Adventure is something that many alike look for in their lives. Of course, very few get to experience it firsthand, so they reach for books, or movies, to live that dream in their stead. Others, like me however, find that exhilarating sensation in the medium of video games, specifically the ones featuring a silent protagonist. They function as a blank slate for the player to project themselves on, as the game’s narrative takes you on a voyage through places that tantalizes the human imagination. They allow for the player to choose how they interact with the world’s many characters, how they interpret what’s seen and heard, what’s fought and spared. You’re given full freedom to fill in the gaps yourself, instead of relying on what the plot demands. My goal was to replicate this feeling, but naturally, some things were lost in translation, most notably the interactivity. However, I could still put the reader in the center of action, where they could think and judge as they saw fit. I purposely kept the protagonist ambiguous, both in his actions and physique, to fit every reader. As for the setting, I opted to base it on one of my own experience with a video game that I’ve always very much enjoyed playing, and still do. You’ll find that more than one character design, and at least a couple of the monsters, resemble those from the game. The idea of a gorgeous, yet perilous, woodland labyrinth is one that, to fans of the game at least, should not sound unfamiliar either.
