Rait par Tairtay Jazeeray is a collection of 6 short story fiction pieces of Riffat Naheed Sajjad. The writer has carved a beautiful mixture of reality and dream around a brave and courageous Pakistani girl. Her central female character is always educated and mindful of the values of the traditional, middle class Pakistani background, yet she is not a prisoner, nor is she afraid to challenge the stereotype thinking of her society and surroundings. Dastak is the first short story of Rait par Tairtay Jazeeray, which describes the most colorful and tedious life of a young medical female student, who while studying hard for becoming a good doctor, comes across this rugged and strange injured man who later turns out to be a notorious comrade with every possible wrongdoing filed against him by the state. The story has an open ending and finishes with the death of the main male character. This was a very unusual and difficult subject to handle during (or right after) the strict censorship era of General Zia ul Haq's Martial Law, which writer handled with the utmost aptness. The story was printed in an Urdu language monthly periodical without a flinch or frown from Pakistan s military hierarchy of that time. Sitaray, Chandni, Mai, Phool, Khushboo is another reflection of the unique story. The main female character of the story is trying hard to save a loveless, difficult marriage of compromise and is baffled when a strange opportunity knocks on her door; a rich, handsome, educated man is suddenly head over heels in love with her. As a good and faithful, Muslim and Pakistani wife, she chooses to stay with her fat and chubby bureaucrat husband, leaves the attractive, good looking guy behind and raises her child alone even while the husband and marriage is dead for a long time. To a traditional Pakistani audience, this story today may seem like an attempt to combine a tale of romance and duty where the call of duty always manages to win. Yet the sensitivity with which the writer combined the inner conflict of a woman's heart and mind is impeccable and cannot help but leave its imprint on the reader s heart. It is also justified to note that this particular story was written in the late nineties, at a time when Pakistani society was way more conservative about the notion of a woman's individuality and the idea of a happy marriage was even more farfetched. Ironically, the number of Pakistani working women has increased over the years, yet the Pakistani society has become a bit more rigid about women's roles in society, which in itself is leaving behind many bigger and unanswered questions for today's Pakistan.
