"Origins and Development of Racial Ideology in Trinidad" deals with race relations in Trinidad, in particular the Black view of East Indians who, during the period of indentureship, 1845-1917, were referred to as 'Coolies.' As the system of indentureship developed, the word Coolie took on a new meaning. It now meant a being so debased and degraded that he or she represented a lower level of humanity. Using extensive social, political and economic data, the book argues that the transformation of the meaning of 'Coolie' resulted from the development of a racial ideology by the colonial state and its allies. Such an ideology was needed both to justify the coercion of indentured labour by the colonial state and to resolve the acute contradiction in bourgeois notions of freedom that the strong-arm approach to the regulation of labour produced. The general reader and student of history will find in this 330 page book a wealth of information on indentured immigration and on the sugar industry in the nineteenth century. The book also brings to light for the first time the role played by the churches, particularly the Presbyterian Church of Canada in Trinidad, in the denigration of the East Indian.
