The author of the Palestine Question and the Jewish Problem; has subtitled his book History that Historians have overlooked, and covers the period from the Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917 to the UN decision of November 29, 1947 to partition Palestine. The author, from an Arab point of view critically examines and analyses the subject period and in an unprecedented move finds fault with the Palestinian Arab leadership, in challenging the Zionist design on Palestine, aided and abetted by the Western European Powers and the United States, to suit one's own domestic electoral agenda. The Palestinians were left alone to fend for themselves and hence could not adequately recognise the enormity of the problem that had been thrust upon them, and were unable to acknowledge their limitation. Over the span of thirty years, the Palestinian leadership opted for confrontation with the Zionists and the British Mandatory Power rather than pursuing a policy of containment against the aggressors. Containment, as an element of policy, was totally alien to the Arab diplomatic dictionary and proved so in subsequent years. What a pity and waste of time and opportunities. Today, the author claims that, notwithstanding the passage of time, the Palestine question remains unanswered, and the Jewish problem, despite the prowess of Israel, is exemplified by latent anti-Semitism in different parts of the world that are ready to explode. The author insists that the two issues are closely intertwined, that the ball sits in the Israeli court and that direct negotiations is the only recourse, as the European powers and the Americans have failed to date in their efforts to mediate a compromise solution. In his vision of the future, the author presents three models for the Arab countries to pursue along the path towards Arab unity. Firstly, that of the European Union, an organisation of 27 States; India, a coherent and cohesive union which is a model of political integration and pluralism; and lastly Japan, a model of country that had successfully reconciled between modernisation and westernisation, without sacrificing its own identity, to promote economic progress and perpetuate the democratic process.
