Les Ouvrages de galanterie, & en général toutes les Histoires qui ont l¿air de Roman, n¿ont plus de cours ; on commence à préférer la Vérité aux vraisemblances les plus flatteuses & les plus agréables. Je sais que l¿étude de la Philosophie est maintenant fort à la mode. Tous ceux qui combattent nos préjugés, ou qui éclaircissent une matière abstraite, sont bien reçus, du moins par les Lecteurs intelligents Les plus beaux efforts de l¿esprit humain sont ceux qui tendent à perfectionner notre Raison. Pour moi, je me suis senti trop faible à la vue d¿un travail si considérable, & j¿ai tâché de mériter par une autre voie l¿approbation du Monde savant. On ne dédaigne pas aujourd¿hui un heureux mélange d¿érudition & de critique, pourvu que ce mélange soit également éloigné de l¿aridité des Compilateurs, & de l¿affectation du Pédantisme. Voilà le milieu que j¿ai cru devoir tenir, pour donner à cet Ouvrage un air d¿élégance & de vivacité. On trouvera ici des endroits qui paraîtront peut-être chargés d¿un trop grand nombre de citations : j¿avoue que c¿est un mal, mais un mal inévitable mérite d¿être excusé. La nature du sujet a voulu que je me servisse du témoignage de plusieurs Auteurs anciens & modernes, je leur ai fait parler leur Langue naturelle, quand j¿ai cru ne pouvoir conserver en Français les grâces & la beauté de l¿original. L¿Urbanité des Romains & l¿Atticisme des Grecs sont des choses qui s¿altèrent facilement par une traduction : il faut être aussi sûr de son génie que l¿était feu Monsieur d¿Ablancourt, pour entreprendre de naturaliser les Apophtegmes des Anciens. Comme je n¿ai pas travaillé à ce Livre dans le dessein de toujours badiner, ou de toujours parler sérieusement, j¿espère qüon y trouvera une assez grande variété. Oserai-je le dire, j¿ai affecté un certain désordre dans l¿arrangement des matières, afin de les rendre plus neuves & plus égayées. Une régularité trop scrupuleuse déplait & ennuie à la fin ; mais un peu d¿embarras étonne l¿imagination, & l¿invite à fixer SA légèreté naturelle. Il y a des points de vue qüon ne cherche que pour trouver des objets dont la diversité soit pleine de bizarreries, l¿Art même vient souvent au secours de la nature, pour augmenter un si agréable désordre, & pour le faire mieux sentir.
