When the residents of Stonor Manor awoke on the morning of July 18, they were shocked to learn that the elderly owner, Aubrey Armstrong, had passed away the night before. She had been injected with strychnine and left to die. Arthur Thomas, a soldier from the Western Front who is on sick leave and staying as a guest at this country manor, travels to the neighbouring village of Stonor St. Isabella to seek assistance from his friend Jimmy Hawkins. Aubrey was an extremely wealthy lady. Her household is comprised of the following people: her husband, Montgomery Armstrong, a younger man whom she recently married; her stepsons, Dylan and Louis Thomson, from her second husband's first marriage; Dylan's wife, Isabella Thomson; Marley Williamson, the daughter of a family friend who passed away; and Georgia Barnes, who is Aubrey's companion. Her stepsons Dylan and Louis Thomson are from her second husband's first marriage.Hawkins discovers that Dylan is slated to inherit the manor property from Aubrey in accordance with the terms of his father's will. However, the money that she inherited would be distributed in accordance with her own will, which she changed at least once per year; her most recent will favours Montgomery, who will inherit her fortune. On the day of the murder, Aubrey had been engaged in a heated discussion with another individual, with suspicion falling on either Montgomery or Dylan. After this, she had been in quite a lot of distress, and it appears that she drafted a new will. Nobody has been able to locate any proof of this new will. A late departure from the manor was followed by Montgomery's spending the night in the nearby village. In the meantime, Aubrey ate very little during dinner and went to bed early, taking her document case with her. When her body was discovered, the case had been broken open. No one can explain how or when the poison was given to her, and nobody knows how it happened. The officer in charge of the investigation, Inspector Hunt, has come to the conclusion that Montgomery is the most likely culprit in this case because he stands to benefit the most from the death of his wife. During the course of the investigation, Hawkins observes that Montgomery's actions raise some red flags. Despite the fact that there is evidence to the contrary, Montgomery will not provide an alibi for the investigation and openly denies buying strychnine in the village. Hawkins steps in to prevent Hunt from arresting him by demonstrating that the suspect could not have bought the poison because the signature on the receipt for the purchase is not written in Hunt's handwriting. The focus of suspicion has shifted to Dylan because he stands to benefit the most from Aubrey's will and because he does not have an alibi for the murder. Soon after, Hunt is able to place him under arrest because the signature on the poison was written in his handwriting, a phial that had been used to store the poison was discovered in his room, and a beard and a pair of pince-nez that were identical to Montgomery's were discovered within the manor.
