He graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle and later attended the University of Washington and graduated in 1964 from its law school. From 1965 to 1994 he resided in Port Townsend, Washington, and presently lives in Seattle. His hobbies are bushwhacking along mountain rivers looking for gold, contra and Zydeco dancing, and reading about people.
