Nothing more strangely indicates an enormous and silent evil of modern society than theextraordinary use which is made nowadays of the word orthodox. In former days the hereticwas proud of not being a heretic. It was the kingdoms of the world and the police and the judgeswho were heretics. He was orthodox. He had no pride in having rebelled against them; they hadrebelled against him. The armies with their cruel security, the kings with their cold faces, thedecorous processes of State, the reasonable processes of law-all these like sheep had goneastray. The man was proud of being orthodox, was proud of being right. If he stood alone in ahowling wilderness he was more than a man; he was a church. He was the centre of the universe;it was round him that the stars swung. All the tortures torn out of forgotten hells could not makehim admit that he was heretical. But a few modern phrases have made him boast of it. He says, with a conscious laugh, I suppose I am very heretical, and looks round for applause. The wordheresy not only means no longer being wrong; it practically means being clear-headed andcourageous. The word orthodoxy not only no longer means being right; it practically meansbeing wrong. All this can mean one thing, and one thing only. It means that people care less forwhether they are philosophically right. For obviously a man ought to confess himself crazybefore he confesses himself heretical. The Bohemian, with a red tie, ought to pique himself onhis orthodoxy. The dynamiter, laying a bomb, ought to feel that, whatever else he is, at least he isorthodox.

Heretics G. K. Chesterton Author

Witty and honest about belief in the Christian Faith, Heretics is a collection of essays from the 20th century by the “prince of paradox,” G.K. Chesterton. While recognized as a philosopher as well as a social critic, Chesterton is also considered a lay theologian due to the nature of his content. Along with Heretics, Chesterton has also written apologetics, poetry, and even fantasy novels with faith interwoven into the themes. His essays in Heretics focus on well-known individuals from the 20th century, such as Rudyard Kipling and H. G. Wells, who pride themselves on separating their morals and ethics from Christian values, or “heretics” with an unpopular opinion. While the main goal of his work is to observe these prominent figures, he also makes his own observations on philosophy, theology, nihilism, and life itself throughout the novel.Heretics makes use of G.K. Chesterton’s good humor and his curiosity of the universe to make stark, yet thought-provoking, criticism on those who stick to incomplete beliefs without questioning further.
Heretics G. K. Chesterton Author (1905)
ISBN: 9798671620917 bzw. 8671620913, vermutlich in Englisch, Independently published, Taschenbuch, neu.
Heretics is a collection of 20 essays originally published by G. K. Chesterton in 1905. While the loci of the chapters of Heretics are personalities, the topics he debates are as universal to the vague moderns of the 21st century as they were to those of the 20th. He quotes at length and argues against atheist apologist and eugenicist Joseph Martin McCabe extensively, delivers diatribes about his close personal friend and intellectual rival, George Bernard Shaw, as well as Nietzsche, H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling and an array of other major intellectuals of his day, many of whom he knew personally. The topics he touches upon range from Cosmology to Anthropology to Soteriology and he argues against French nihilism, German Humanism, English Utilitarianism, the Syncretism of the vague modern, Social Darwinism, Eugenics and the arrogance and misanthropy of the European Intelligentsia. Together with Orthodoxy, this book is regarded as the finest flagship of his corpus of moral theology; a binary system in the cosmos of western philosophy.
