He tried to humble himself, but in the depths of his soul he never ceased to criticise him. And this feeling eventually broke out in a personal encounter. It happened in the second year of his life in the new monastery, and in the following manner: On the day of the Intercession a vesger service was being celebrated in the big church. There was a multitude of visitors. The abbot himself officiated. Father Sergius stood in his accustomed place praying, that is he was in his usual frame of mind into which he was wont to lapse during services, particularly in the big church, when he did not officiate himself,--he was fighting an inner battle. The inner battle was due to the irritation he felt on account of the visitors, particularly the ladies. He tried not to see them, not to notice what was going on, not to observe the soldier who was accompanying them and pushing the throng aside before them, or how the ladies pointed out the different monks one to another, frequently singling him out as the handsome monk. He pulled down the blinds, as it were, over his powers of observation, striving to see nothing but the gleaming of the candles about the altar, the icons and the celebrants; to hear nothing but the chanted and spoken words of prayer, to experience nothing but the feeding of self-oblivion in the consciousness of duty performed which he always experienced, as he heard and repeated in advance the familiar prayers.
