The growing diversity and the growing number of psychologists in the world could be seen as a threat to the unity of the field. This is not a theoretical issue as we are facing more and more practical problems due to: the difficulty for psychologists active in varous sub-discuplines to share common values; contradictory opinions on what should be a more common basis of knowledge for all psychology students; and more and more difficulty when we try to agree on a "large" definition of what is psychology. This special issue is aimed at describing the present state of the problem of the unity of psychology in different parts of the world, as seen by psychologists belonging to various sub-fields and approached from several points of view. Even if there is no general agreement on a model of reunification of psychology, the dangers linked to a breaking up of psychology into secveral applied domains and of research in psychology into several fields no longer able to cross-fertilize one another is outlined.
