Constance Smithwood's Hello Darling is an autobiographical book with the familiar theme of dreams come true. However, there is nothing run-of-the-mill about this publication, and these are no ordinary lives. Basing her book largely on a series of letters written by her husband, the Littleton author has penned a unique, challenging and inspirational account of their journey toward a common goal. Their intent was to contribute something good and worthwhile to the world around them. "It's the most heart-warming book," said Curtis Bates, principal of the Shaker Lane School, where Smithwood teaches. "It's almost surreal - as if it was meant to be." He continued, "I said to her "Connie, this would make a wonderful movie." Robert Lowell Smithwood and Constance Anne Foote met in 1953 at the American Baptist Assembly in Green Lake, Wisconsin. At the time, Robert was a medical student at Indiana University and Constance a freshman at Wheelock College in Boston. They quickly discovered that they shared the same religious relationship as having "many stars in common." They married and hoped that through their shared strength and their work - he as a doctor and she as a teacher of young children - they could enhance the lives of others. "We both felt that we were called to do something special with our lives," Smithwood said. However, after six years of marriage when their children were 5,3 and 2 years old, illness struck the family. In 1960, at age 35, Robert died of Hodgkin's Disease, and six months later, at age 27, Constance was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The book reflects Smithwood's thoughts as a single parent who was then coping with her own serious illness. "Looking back over my life, I think I looked on multiple sclerosis as a challenge; making me even more determined to work to make my corner of the world a better place," she wrote. Soon after Robert's death, Smithwood moved from Indiana to Littleton, where she concentrated on raising her family and on her work as a teacher. "I tried to raise our children as caring, responsible adults and today think of them as my best friends. In my teaching, as I strive to unlock the door to the world of reading for young children, I try to make them feel worthy, important and capable," she said. My few short years of life with Robert," she added, "gave me the love and inspiration to work toward that elusive goal we dreamed of from the beginning of our relationship." Smithwood explained the inspiration for her book: "Robert's death at 35 precluded his following the dreams for his work and our marriage to any semblance of a conclusion. To influence the lives of others by telling our story and sharing our dreams through our letters has long been my desire - perhaps in that way we will reach far more people than would have been possible had he lived." Smithwood also wanted their three children, Martha, Robert and Douglas to know as much as possible about their father. Those who have read her book think she succeeded. "I really felt as if I did know Robert after reading the book," Littleton's Charlotte Rafferty pointed out. "In it, the joy they shared is preserved. Connie held on to that. The children must not feel they didn't have a father. His presence is very much with them." Smithwood is familiar to many people in town as a Reading Recovery teacher at Shaker Lane School. She is active in town affairs and at the First Baptist Church and is a trustee for the Little Scholarship Trust Fund. "Being a cockeyed optimist and an incurable romantic does not necessarily mean that one can't be a realist," she said. The Friends of the Library hosted a reception for Smithwood in the meeting room at the Reuben Hoar Library on Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m. (1997) (written by Jackie Young, correspondent for the Littleton Independent, 3/27/97), Hardcover, Label: Constance A.
