Mad scientists working for the Watchers may be trying to create evil chimeras aimed at controlling and destroying the world. As di Angelo strode along the sidewalk in the woman's direction, ducks quacked and, upset at being disturbed, flew up from the water into the parkland while pigeons hurriedly ran out of his way noiselessly. Di Angelo's cape blew behind him in the sudden wind while pink petals from budding trees landed on him and upon the path. At first glance Gabriella appeared to be an illusion at dusk---a specter in a lilac gown reflected in the moonlight, standing hip deep in the muddy water of the pond beside the Temple.
