This book describes those astonishing pioneers and their motivations, the tragedies and triumphs,the public fears,and ruthless resistance by owners of canals,land and stagecoaches; and stormy debates in Parliament on this controversial project.There are the rumbustious personality clashes between Stephenson and Rennie,Locke,Vignoles, Cropper; the formidable problems of railway construction,tunnelling under Liverpool,and the incredible navvies.Then come the famous Rainhill Trials,Stephenson's Rocket triumph,and his brief encounter with a pretty,young actress.Accounts are given of the track,crude signalling,locomotives,carriages,waggons, stations,the new railwaymen and the horrendous suffering and deaths in this pioneering venture of trial and error.Examined is the influence of this railway,and of others that quickly followed,on trade and industry; on social reform,and the awakening processes of democracy.The Railway's operations and finances are explained,covering its fifteen years of independence.Liverpool & Manchester pioneers built many other new railways in Britain and overseas,and survived the Railway Mania.Progress of the line through to the twentieth century and the end of steam is briefly sketched.The final chapter portrays the 150th anniversary celebrations of 1980,a dazzling railway extravaganza of such range and content that may never be repeated - a fitting tribute to the most notable piece of railway in the world,and to the men who made it.
