NEWPORT PAGNEL is a market town and parish, in the hundred of Newport, county of Bucks; it is 4 miles west of the line, and 51 N. W. from London; pop. 3, 385; An. As. Val. 9, 208; market, Saturday; fairs, Feb. 22d, April 22d, June 22d, August 28th, October 22d; and for cattle, December 22d. This town, one of the largest in the county, is situated on a gentle eminence. In the time of the Civil HUDIBRAS. 119 From arrangements which have been entered into by the Company with respect to the coaching department, the Leighton Station will be the most convenient for persons going to Fenny Stratford. Wars it was held for the King by Prince Rupert, until 1643, when the Earl of Essex took possession of it for the Parliament. Sir Samuel Luke, supposed to be the Hudibras of Butler, was governor in 1645. The principal manufacture of the town is lacemaking, and it is supposed to make more than all the other parts of England put together; the lacemarket is held on Wednesday. Water is supplied to the town by wells, and a branch of the Grand Junction Canal, which comes up to the town, enables the inhabitants to obtain their coal from Staffordshire. The church, dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, is an ancient and spacious structure, with a square tower, situated upon a considerable eminence, which commands delightful views of the surrounding country; the living is a dis-vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Lincoln; K. B. 10; it is in the patronage of the Crown, and is endowed with 400 by royal bounty and private benefactio. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN.
