Wild Path and Chan Dao: Gary Snyder, born in 1930, is a famous American poet, essayist, translator, Chan practitioner, environmental activist and a forerunner of the Beat Generation. Snyder`s ecological thought is highly influential in the West. His ideas are deeply rooted in Eastern culture, especially Chan Buddhism. Their relationship have been actively investigated by scholars of comparative literature. Qu Hong`s doctoral dissertation "e Gary Snyder and Chinese Culture"e first touched upon this topic Zhong Ling`s "e Snyder and Chinese Culture"e as well as "e American Poet Snyder and Asian Culture: A Paradigm of Western Adoption of Eastern Thought`, Geng Jiyong`s `Ecological Poetry and Cultural Fusion: On Gary Snyder`s Ecological Poetry` and Mao Ming`s "e Dialogue Across Time: Ecological Poetics of Contemporary American Poet Snyder and Natural Aesthetics in Premodern China"e , among others, dedicated chapters to explore this topic along the line of comparative literature. Worthy of note are Zhong Ling`s approach of studying Snyder`s Chan Buddhist though through paintings and calligraphy, as well as Mao Ming`s examination of the important role of Taoism in Snyder`s thought. Due to a lack of systematic research of Chan Buddhism based on original canonical texts, however, fragments of Chan Buddhism materials are reduced to footnotes of Snyder`s thought. Chen Xiaohong, Hong Na and Gao Ge`s monographs on Snyder also raised the subject, though not frequently. Chen Xiaohong`s "e On Gary Snyder`s Chan Buddhist Ecological Outlook"e and Geng Jiyong`s "e On Snyder`s Ecological Regionalism and Chan Buddhism"e drew some broad conclusions based on fragmented evidence. Chen Zhigan`s "e Vagabond in the Mountain Forest and Hermit in Human Society: The Marriage Between Gary Snyder and Traditional Chinese Ecological Wisdom"e tried for the first time to engage Snyder in a dialogue with traditional Chinese ecological wisdom. Generally speaking, the academia has made considerable progress from the perspective of Asian culture, Chinese culture and Buddhism. But study of Chan Buddhism based on original texts remain the biggest challenge in investigating the relationship in question. Besides, above-mentioned research approaches can also be problematic. The organic integration of literature, poetics, ethics, ecological though and Chan Buddhism requires a proper framework. The author believes the framework should be ecological aesthetics, because aesthetics is a mediator between literature and philosophy, as well as Snyder`s role as both a postmodern poet and an ecological philosopher.
