Philology of Modern Chinese Literature: "e ae-cA (R)"e (philology) first appeared in The Analects: Ba Yi: I could describe the ceremonies of the Xia dynasty, but Qi cannot sufficiently attest my words. I could describe the ceremonies of the Yin dynasty, but Song cannot sufficiently attest my words. (They cannot do so) because of the insufficiency of their records and wise men. If those were sufficient, I could adduce them in support of my words."e Confucius meant that he could explain the ceremonies of the Xia and Yin dynasties as there were sufficient records, but was unable to study those of Qi and Song, due to a lack of records. According to Zhu Xi`s annotation of "e ae-cA (R)"e : "e ae-"e means canons while "e cA (R)"e indicates wise men. "e ae-cA (R)"e first appeared as a title in Wenxian Tongkao compiled by Ma Duanlin between Song and Yuan dynasties. In the author`s preface he said, "e `ae-`means classics and histories of antiquity while `cA (R)` indicates memorials to the throne by ministers since Tang and Song dynasties as well as essays by Confucian scholars, hence the title `ae-cA (R)ese ` (Wenxian Tongkao). He followed Zhu Xi`s theory and defined "e ae-"e as classics and histories of antiquity, expanded Zhu Xi`s definition of "e cA (R)"e from "e wise men"e into "e ministers and Confucian scholars"e , and pointed out that Zhu Xi`s "e wise men"e is actually "e words of the wise men"e , namely "e memorials to the throne by ministers since Tang and Song dynasties as well as essays by Confucian scholars"e . Ma Duanlin defined "e ae-"e as narrative and "e cA (R)"e as commentary, which is clearer and more reasonable than the definitions of his predecessors, and more widely accepted.
