Sinking of British ship `Lusitania´ by the Germans attained significance as it was due to the sinking of this ship which created great uproar in U.S., because many Americans who were in this ship were drowned. This event contributed in U.S. joining the World War 1. Out of the events of World War II Japanese attack on American bases in Pearl Harbour in the Pacific Ocean is narrated as this event led to the entry of U.S. in the World War II. Besides, this allie´s offensive against Germany at Normandy Coast in France, battle of Britain, defense of Stalingrad and Leningrad by the Russians, death of Hitler and dropping of atom bomb on Japanese city Hiroshima by the America deserved to be included. As the century ran its course colonial subjects started aspiring for freedom from colonial rule. India was the first country to win independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. Subsequently, other countries of Asia and Africa also attained independence from the foreign rulers. While in the dawn of the century colonial rule started fading and towards its end it was completely extinguished. It was not possible to narrate the process of attaining independence of all the countries in this small volume. Nonetheless all important countries of Asia and Egypt in Africa and Israel are dealt with. Russia, China, Japan and Germany have been discussed in detail because their role during the century had been very significant. Landing of American astronauts on the surface of the moon was the most outstanding and fascinating event of the century, which required detailed treatment. Scaling of the Everest was also a landmark in the history of mountaineering. Besides these many more important events of the 20 century have also been included. Books.
