About the book:The Sanchi Stupas are one of the noblest monuments of Buddhist India, worthy to be named in the same breath as the Taj Mahal, the Hindu Black Pagoda of Konarak, the Kailasa Temple of Ellora, and the frescoed cave temples at Ajanta. Together, these majestic monoliths form a memorable picture of ancient India. The magnificent stupa and its four richly carved gates are the chief objects of interest at Sanchi. The Sanchi Stupas have been designated as one of the World Heritage Monuments in India. It was at Sanchi that Emperor Ashoka set up one of his edict pillars, as well as other monuments. So, the history of Sanchi begins during the reign of Ashoka in the third century BC. It covers a period of some 14 centuries, synchronising almost with the rise and fall of Buddhism in India. Unlike other famous Buddhist monuments, Sanchi had no connection with the life or acts of Buddha. The place is scarcely mentioned in Buddhist literature; and the Chinese pilgrims Fa-Hien and Hiuen-Tsang who visited India between the fourth and seventh centuries AD have not a word to say about Sanchi. It is strange, therefore, that these remains are the most magnificent and the most perfect example of Buddhist architecture in India. To make the history of Sanchi and its bearing upon the architecture and sculpture of these monuments more easily intelligible, the book is divided it into three periods: The Early Period-extending from the reign of Ashoka to about AD 400 when Chandra Gupta II overthrew the Kshatrapa power. The Early Medieval Period-from the advent of the Imperial Guptas to the death of the Emperor Harsha in AD 647. The Later Medieval Period-embracing the later medieval period down to the close of the twelfth century. This book educates the reader about Sanchi in a simple, conversational style, and is a must for all lovers of history.
