About the Book : The present work is for the students and scholars alike, and especially for those who are interested in the prehistory and the ancient past of this part of the eastern Indian plateau. Though Preliminary in nature, the study explores all the available archaeological sources of different chrono-cultural phases starting from the palaeolithic to the early medieval period. This has been done with a view to reconstruct the cultural evolution of this part of ancient Bengal. While doing so, the book presents comprehensive investigations of the available archaeological sources - sites and their assemblages. The assemblages display a wide array of prehistoric lithic implements, ceramics, bones (both cut and worked), fossilized objects, stone objects, metals (slags, ores and objects) and other miscellaneous artefacts. Besides, this study also emphasizes the marvellous art tradition (both sculptural and architectural) of this region-a vibrant part of the so-called eastern Indian school of medieval art. Significantly, the archaeology of the early medieval period, one of the burning issues of the recent times, receives special attention here, so as to come to terms with an unbiased regional history of the fringe areas of the Chhotanagpur plateau (during the pre-Malla period) vis. a vis. the rest of the subcontinent.
