In India after more than six decades of independence from British colonial rule, despite many positive changes communal and racial strife, poverty, unemployment, caste and class oppression, corruption, gender bias as well as deep-rooted superstitions still plague the country. Millions are still under below poverty line; thousands are dying every year in starvation. There is no proper education, health care and even potable water available to a large number of people in the country. On the other hand a section of people is growing richer and richer due to exploitative system prevalent in the country. India now needs a complete overhaul of her social and economic system in order to establish an egalitarian society free from exploitation and social inequality. In spite of some Rabindranath Tagore's ambivalent ideas on certain issues, he had never tolerated inactivity and oppression and sought change towards a better future. His perceptions on social change, his tirade against communalism, casteism, untouchability and for gender equality seem to be relevant today particularly on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary. Scholars of India and abroad have written much on the life and works of Tagore in different perspectives. Nevertheless to recall his messages once again in new light and to take lesson seem to be not irrelevant in the present day context. The present work is not intended for a comprehensive study of Tagore. It is a humble homage to him on his 150 birth anniversary.
